Referring domains correlate with ChatGPT citations at the site level

In SE Ranking's study, sites with more referring domains tended to receive more ChatGPT citations. A referring domain is a distinct domain that links to yours. A hundred links from one domain count as one referring domain; one link from each of a hundred domains counts as a hundred.

SE Ranking analyzed about 129,000 domains and found that referring domains were among the strongest predictors of citation counts. Its model examined associations across existing sites. (SE Ranking)

Page-level studies tell a narrower story. In Greenflag's finance sample, a tenfold difference in followed backlinks corresponded to about 10% more ChatGPT citations among cited pages. (Greenflag Digital) Rankability found that 72.8% of AI-cited pages had no page-level referring domains. (Rankability)

These findings measure different things: links to a domain, links to one page, and citation counts within selected samples. Keep those units separate when assessing your own site.

What SE Ranking found across domains

SE Ranking studied 129,000 domains and 216,524 pages across 20 niches. It compared site and page characteristics with citations in ChatGPT responses to 100,000 prompts. The researchers used an XGBoost model to predict citation counts and SHAP analysis to assess which inputs contributed to those predictions. The observational design identifies associations among existing sites. (SE Ranking)

Sites with up to 2,500 referring domains averaged about 1.6 to 1.8 citations. Sites with more than 350,000 averaged 8.4. SE Ranking also reported that sites with more than 32,000 referring domains were 3.5 times more likely to be cited than sites with up to 200. (SE Ranking)

Average citations rose from 2.9 to 5.6 around the 32,000 mark. That number describes the sites in the study; it is a poor target for a smaller site. Large sites can also differ in brand recognition, search traffic, and content volume. The supported conclusion is an association between a broader referring-domain profile and more ChatGPT citations in this dataset.

Domain Trust showed a similar pattern

Sites with a Domain Trust score below 43 averaged about 1.6 citations in SE Ranking's study. Citation counts rose substantially among sites above 90. Domain Trust is SE Ranking's own link-based metric. The study measured its relationship with citations; whether ChatGPT uses the score itself remains unknown. (SE Ranking)

The same distinction applies to Ahrefs' Domain Rating (DR). These tool scores summarize aspects of a site's backlink profile. They help compare sites while leaving the mechanism behind AI citations unresolved.

Greenflag revisited finance pages cited by ChatGPT in September 2026. Among 479 cited pages in its regression, a tenfold difference in followed backlinks corresponded to about 10% more citations. Domain Rating had no statistically detectable relationship with citation counts within that selected group. The sample consisted of highly cited finance pages, and 91% were on domains rated DR 80 or above. (Greenflag Digital)

In a separate analysis of 999 cited finance domains, DR 90–100 sites received 50.2% of all citations. Those sites had more pages cited, while median citations per cited page changed little across DR bands. (Greenflag Digital)

Domain Rating Share of citations Median cited pages per domain Median citations per cited page
90–100 50.2% 524 1.00
80–89 23.0% 307 1.19
70–79 16.9% 217 1.19
50–69 5.7% 174 1.31
Below 50 4.2% 188 1.12

Rankability's broader AI search snapshot also found that 72.8% of cited pages had zero page-level referring domains. A page can therefore appear as a citation without direct backlinks. The effect of adding backlinks to a page remains outside the scope of this snapshot. (Rankability)

For a page audit, review its own backlink profile alongside the site's referring domains and the specific answer the page provides. Each describes a different part of the citation picture.

Domain Rating needs the right comparison group

SE Ranking found large citation differences across Domain Trust bands at the site level. Greenflag found no detectable Domain Rating relationship with citation counts among its already cited, mostly high-DR finance pages. The studies selected different units and samples, so their results answer different questions. (SE Ranking) (Greenflag Digital)

When comparing link metrics, check whether the unit is a domain or a page and whether the study includes pages that received no citations. A score can also rise after acquiring links with little relevance to the questions your pages answer. Track the range and relevance of referring domains, the number of pages cited, and citations per page alongside the score.

Brand mentions in AI Overviews measure another outcome

A cited URL and a brand name appearing in an AI answer are separate forms of visibility. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands with a Domain Rating above 40 whose highest-volume brand keyword had at least 800 monthly searches. It measured correlations with brand mentions in Google AI Overviews. (Ahrefs)

Measure Correlation with AI Overview brand mentions
Brand mentions across the web 0.664
Branded link anchor text 0.527
Domain Rating 0.326
Referring domains 0.295
Backlinks 0.218

Web mentions, which include mentions without a link, had the strongest correlation at 0.664. Backlink count had a correlation of 0.218. Ahrefs measured brand mentions in Google AI Overviews among its selected brands, while SE Ranking measured ChatGPT URL citations. Each result describes its own outcome and sample. (Ahrefs)

Third-party coverage can surface a new product

A newly published product may have few referring domains or little search history. A review or comparison on an established publication could still become the cited URL when an AI answer mentions that product. In that case, the publication receives the URL citation while the product receives a brand mention.

Ahrefs' study offers evidence about brand mentions among domains above DR 40. Its selected sample leaves the relationship for newly launched products unresolved. The publication example describes a possible path to visibility. (Ahrefs)

Recording own-site citations and brand mentions separately shows which form of visibility appears for the queries you monitor. A report limited to citations of your own URLs can miss mentions supported by third-party sources.

Compare referring sources and cited pages

Backlink totals alone leave out useful context. Track these measures together when comparing your site with other sites in the same market:

Measure What it shows
Referring domains How many distinct sites link to the domain
Domain Rating or similar scores A tool's summary of the domain's backlink profile
Number of cited pages How widely citations are distributed across the site
Citations per cited page Whether a few pages are cited repeatedly
Web brand mentions Where third parties name the brand, with or without a link
Brand mentions in AI answers Whether the brand appears even when its URL is absent

SE Ranking's findings make referring domains useful as a comparison measure. Its very large sites provide context for interpreting the data. Compare sites that answer similar queries, then examine which pages are cited and where third parties discuss each brand.

SE Ranking found a positive relationship between referring domains and ChatGPT citation counts. Rankability found many cited pages with no direct referring domains. Greenflag's finance results show a modest page-level backlink relationship within its selected set of cited pages. Review domain links, page links, and citation counts separately, with each study's sample in mind.

Frequently asked questions

Do more backlinks make ChatGPT cite a site more often?

SE Ranking found more ChatGPT citations among sites with more referring domains. The study establishes an association across existing sites; the effect of gaining new backlinks remains untested. (SE Ranking)

Can a low-DR site receive AI citations?

Yes. Greenflag found pages on domains below DR 60 in its top 500 finance pages cited by ChatGPT. Rankability found that one in four AI-cited pages came from a domain below DR 40. These results show that cited pages exist outside the highest DR bands. (Greenflag Digital) (Rankability)

Does every cited page need its own backlinks?

A cited page can have zero direct referring domains. Rankability found that 72.8% of AI-cited pages had none. Greenflag found a small positive association between followed page backlinks and citation counts within its finance sample. (Rankability) (Greenflag Digital)

Are backlinks and brand mentions the same measure?

Backlinks point to a URL, while brand mentions count references to a brand with or without a link. Ahrefs found correlations of 0.218 for backlink count and 0.664 for web brand mentions against AI Overview brand mentions among its selected brands. (Ahrefs)

Is Domain Rating the same as referring domains?

Referring domains count distinct linking websites. Domain Rating is Ahrefs' proprietary score based on backlink data. Check whether a study measures whole domains or individual pages before using either metric to interpret AI citations.
