AI citations and website visits measure different activity

Copilot can cite a client's pricing page even when the reader never clicks through. Visit counts in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) alone cannot show which pages appear as sources in AI answers or how often they are cited.

Microsoft's AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools tracks those citations. It shows cited URLs and citation counts across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations. (Microsoft AI Performance announcement)

Find cited URLs and page citation counts in Pages

Select the client's registered site in Bing Webmaster Tools and open AI Performance. The Read only role provides access to reports. A site administrator can grant that role if you need access. (Microsoft user permissions)

Choose a date range. Total Citations shows the site's overall citation count, while Pages lists cited URLs and their individual counts. Look up the client's pricing pages and comparison articles to see how often each is cited.

A citation count measures appearances as a source in AI answers. It provides no information about a page's position or importance within an answer. The report uses sampled data, and infrequent citations may be absent. (Microsoft citation metrics and sampling)

Use GA4 to measure visits from AI services. The steps are covered in How to track ChatGPT traffic in GA4.

Match phrases to cited URLs in Grounding queries

The Grounding queries tab lists the phrases AI systems used to retrieve source content. Citations from multiple AI answers are grouped under related short phrases.

Select a phrase to see the pages cited for it and their citation counts. Select a URL in Pages to see its associated phrases. One phrase can map to several pages, and one page can map to several phrases. (Microsoft query and page mapping)

Full user questions and individual AI answers are unavailable in Grounding queries. A phrase such as time and attendance software setup costs alone cannot reveal whether the user asked about initial setup or data migration. (Microsoft grounding query aggregation)

On a cited pricing page, check the amounts alongside what the price includes and when extra charges apply. On comparison articles, review the intended business size, usage conditions, feature differences, and the date the comparison was updated. Fill information gaps using the client's price list, contract terms, and product documentation.

Citation Share uses all sites' citations for the same phrase as its denominator

Citation Share is a preview feature that shows the percentage of citations across all sites for the same phrase attributed to the client's site. The percentage is calculated as follows. (Microsoft Citation Share definition)

Citation Share
= Citations for the client's site for a given grounding query
÷ Citations across all sites for the same grounding query × 100

Citations can rise 50% while Citation Share falls by half

For a client offering time and attendance software, compare citations for time and attendance software comparison in August and September. Each period covers 30 days, with citations aggregated across the report's supported AI services and no restriction to Japan.

Citation share calculation (hypothetical figures)

Reporting period Citations for the client's site Citations across all sites for the same phrase Citation Share
August 1–30, 2026 30 100 30%
September 1–30, 2026 45 300 15%

The client's citations increased 50%, from 30 to 45, while Citation Share fell 15 percentage points, from 30% to 15%. The client's citation count grew by a factor of 1.5, while the count across all sites tripled.

Compare citation counts over equal periods for the same phrase

Compare overlays a previous period on the current citation chart. You can compare against the preceding period or choose two custom date ranges.

When comparing citation counts and Citation Share for a phrase, use periods of equal length, such as 30 days before and 30 days after a page update. Keep the same site, phrase, and filters throughout the comparison.

An increase following a page update can also reflect changes in user questions, other websites, or AI models. Citation trends alone cannot establish whether a page update caused the change. (Microsoft Compare and Citation Share guidance)

The page and query views may sample slightly different time windows within the selected date range, so their counts can differ. Use the same view and filters for comparisons before and after an update. CSV and Excel exports retain the active filter. Record the export date, reporting period, and filters so the next month's comparison uses consistent conditions. (Microsoft data and export specifications)

Check cited pages against current pricing and product documentation

AI Performance identifies cited pages and associated query phrases. It also shows citation counts and the site's Citation Share for a given phrase. Compare pricing and product information on cited pages with the client's current documentation to check accuracy and identify missing explanations.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI Performance cover all citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity?

The documented scope covers Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations. It cannot provide comprehensive citation data across all AI services, including ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Do citation counts measure website visits?

Citation counts measure appearances as a source in AI answers. GA4 measures website visits. AI Performance and GA4 have different measurement scopes, so dividing GA4 visits by citations does not produce a valid click-through rate for citation links in AI answers.

Does Citation Share identify competitor sites?

Citation Share shows the client's percentage of citations for the same phrase. Competitor domains and the breakdown of the remaining share are unavailable.

Does missing data mean there were zero citations?

AI Performance uses sampled citation data and may omit infrequent citations. A missing entry alone cannot confirm zero citations.
