Listicles and comparison pages frequently appear in AI citations
AI search responses often cite listicles and comparison pages for questions that ask readers to choose among products or services, such as best X, X vs Y, and alternatives to X.
Wix Studio AI Search Lab analyzed 75,000 AI answers and 1,056,727 citations. Listicles accounted for 21.9% of citations, followed by articles at 16.7% and product pages at 13.7%. For commercial queries, listicles accounted for 40%. (Wix Studio AI Search Lab)
Evertune's analysis of approximately 25,000 frequently cited URLs found that 63% of roughly 400 million citations pointed to listicles. (Search Engine Land)
These results describe the formats that appeared in the cited data. A listicle earns its value when it gives a reader the product name, evaluation criteria, differences between candidates, price, and limitations needed to make a choice.
Citation shares differ across studies
Each study uses different queries, AI search services, time windows, and methods for classifying citations. Their percentage values are not interchangeable.
| Study | Dataset | Main finding |
|---|---|---|
| Wix Studio AI Search Lab | 75,000 AI answers and 1,056,727 citations | Listicles: 21.9%; articles: 16.7%; product pages: 13.7% |
| Evertune | About 25,000 frequently cited URLs and roughly 400 million citations | 63% of citations pointed to listicles |
| Lantern | More than 200 million citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude | Listicles: 35.6%; comparison content: 9–14% |
Lantern reports that listicles accounted for 35.6% of the citations it analyzed, while comparison content accounted for 9–14% across the AI search services in its dataset. (Lantern)
Wix found that query intent had a larger relationship with cited format than industry or AI search service. Informational queries cited articles 2.7 times more often than other intents, while commercial queries cited listicles at a 40% share. (Wix Studio AI Search Lab)
Use a standard explanatory article for a definition query. Use a listicle or comparison page when the query asks a reader to assess several candidates.
Give each candidate a complete information block
A listicle can keep the information needed to assess one candidate in one place. For a service, that includes its name, intended user, price, features, and limitations. A comparison page applies the same fields to every candidate.
Service A is designed for small teams and costs $29 per month. Its basic plan supports up to five people and includes unlimited history.
The excerpt identifies the service, its audience, its price, and its constraints without relying on surrounding paragraphs.
Lantern identifies specific claims, a clear organizing principle, and enough supporting context for each item as characteristics of cited listicles. Each item should stand on its own and support the claim in its heading. (Lantern)
Evertune reported that 71–86% of the listicles in its analysis used rankings. Pages such as best laptops and Top 5 CRM tools match queries where readers need a defined set of candidates. (Search Engine Land)
How to write listicles and comparison pages
State who the article serves, what it compares, and what evidence informs the evaluation before presenting candidates.
State criteria and ranking reasons in listicles
A best accounting software article might evaluate:
- Monthly price
- Support for sole proprietors or companies
- Bank and card integrations
- Invoicing features
- Accountant access
- Support channels
Use the same fields for every candidate.
| Field | What to state |
|---|---|
| Product name | The official product name |
| Intended user | The user or use case it fits |
| Distinguishing feature | A verifiable difference from other candidates |
| Limitation | A constraint that affects adoption |
| Price | Current price and billing unit |
When an article assigns a rank, it needs to state the ranking criteria that produced that rank. A numbered list alone does not explain why a candidate belongs in a particular position.
Prices and features that change often require an update date and a fresh check of the price, plan, and core features.
Compare the same attributes in X vs Y pages
An X vs Y page should state the most relevant difference between the products near the opening.
Service A offers lower-cost features for small teams. Service B includes detailed permission controls and more integrations for organizations with larger teams.
The table that follows compares both products using the same attributes.
| Field | Service A | Service B |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | $29 | $79 |
| Intended user | Small teams | Mid-sized teams |
| Permission controls | Basic | Detailed |
| Integrations | 20 | More than 100 |
| Main limitation | Fewer features for large operations | Higher cost for small teams |
Price, team size, supported regions, support, and implementation work can each change the recommendation. Compare those factors with the same criteria rather than choosing a winner solely by feature count.
Keep table headers and cells unambiguous
Use direct headers such as Price, Best for, Features, and Limitations. A reader should understand what a column represents from its header.
Putting price, features, and exceptions in one cell requires the reader to infer which information belongs to which category. Limit each cell to one type of information.
GetCito reports a 68% citation rate for tables with three to five columns and 19% for tables with eight or more columns. This is the company's own test result, so it does not establish a fixed rule for every comparison table. Separate pricing, features, and support into focused tables when a table becomes too wide. (GetCito)
Third-party listicles can also become citation sources
Publishing a comparison page on your own site is one option. Third-party best-of articles can also be important sources.
In Wix Studio AI Search Lab's professional services dataset, third-party pages made up 80.9% of citations from listicles, while self-promotional listicles accounted for 19.1%. (Wix Studio AI Search Lab)
This result applies to the professional services segment in that study. It shows why a team should check the pages AI search actually cites for its important queries.
For a project management product, relevant queries may include:
- best project management software
- best project management software for small teams
- Asana alternatives
- Asana vs Monday
- project management tools for agencies
When a repeatedly cited page does not include your product, it is a potential editorial placement. Give the editor current pricing, feature documentation, comparison pages, reviews, case studies, and integrations that can be verified.
Errors that weaken comparison content
Comparison content needs evidence and judgment that a reader can inspect. Common errors include:
- Publishing a recommendation order without criteria
- Giving a brand's own product a prominent position while reducing competitors to minimal descriptions
- Using different fields for each product
- Explaining price and feature differences only in long prose
- Leaving outdated prices or discontinued features in the article
- Applying a best X format to a definition query
- Describing each candidate in a single sentence without its evaluation basis
Evertune cautions against producing self-promotional listicles that place a company's own brand first without a substantive basis. (Search Engine Land)
When a comparison includes your own product, apply the same evaluation criteria to your company and its competitors. Use verifiable facts about price, features, audience, and limitations.
Match the format to a selection query
The available studies show that listicles and comparison content appear often among AI citation sources. Their usefulness depends on the question the reader is trying to answer.
Use listicles for best X and alternatives queries that require candidates and evaluation criteria. Use X vs Y pages to compare differences with the same attributes. Keep audience, features, limitations, and price current for every candidate.
Check whether third-party comparison pages cited for important queries include your product and present its information accurately.

X / @okamoto_yuma_Frequently asked questions
Do listicles automatically earn AI citations?
A listicle can earn citations when it answers a selection query with criteria and candidate information readers can inspect. Wix's data shows a relationship between query intent and cited format: listicles were common in commercial queries, while articles were cited more often for informational queries. (Wix Studio AI Search Lab)
Does a best X article need rankings?
Ranked listicles were common in Evertune's analysis. When an article uses rankings, it needs to identify the evaluation criteria and the reason for each rank. (Search Engine Land)
Can a company include its own product in a comparison?
A company can include its own product when the page applies the same evaluation criteria to every candidate and supports claims with verifiable facts about price, features, audience, and limitations.
Which fields belong in a comparison table?
Use fields that inform the choice, such as price, intended user, core features, usage limits, and support. Apply the same fields to every product and use headers that identify the information in each column.
Should teams also check third-party comparison pages?
Third-party listicles were frequently cited in Wix's professional services dataset. Checking repeatedly cited pages for important queries reveals whether a product is included and whether its information is accurate. (Wix Studio AI Search Lab)
