Why third-party sources matter for AI search citations

Improving a company website matters, but so does how the brand is described on third-party sites.

Muck Rack analyzed more than 25 million links in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini responses. Eighty-four percent were classified as earned media. (Muck Rack: Earned media still drives 84% of AI citations)

AirOps analyzed 21,311 brand mentions in commercial-intent queries. It found that 85% came from external domains, compared with 13.2% from a brand's own domain. (AirOps: Third-Party Sources Drive 85% of Brand Discovery)

The studies measure different things, but both show that AI answers draw widely on sources beyond a company's own domain.

Alongside work on your own pages, review the brand name, description, and pricing shown in comparison articles, reviews, communities, and industry publications.

Common third-party sites

In March 2026, Peec AI analyzed 30 million sources across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews in the United States. (Peec AI: Top domains cited by AI search)

Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Wikipedia ranked highly across multiple AI services. That ranking is a useful list of sites frequently cited in AI search.

Choose places for your brand information from the sources that appear in your industry and for your target queries.

Industry or topic Examples of third-party sites
B2B SaaS G2, Capterra, LinkedIn, comparison articles, industry publications
Web development and software agencies Clutch, LinkedIn, comparison articles, industry publications
Ecommerce and consumer goods Reddit, YouTube, review sites, comparison publishers
Travel Tripadvisor, Booking.com, Reddit, YouTube
Local businesses Yelp, local publications, review sites

Choose brand-information placements from sites that are repeatedly cited for your target queries.

For example, when G2 appears repeatedly in B2B SaaS queries, review the product profile there. When Clutch appears in agency-comparison queries, its listing becomes relevant.

Third-party sites broadly fall into three groups: external profiles that a company can manage, review sites and communities, and comparison articles and industry publications.

1. External profiles a company can manage

Some third-party sites provide profiles that a company can edit.

Common examples include:

  • LinkedIn Company Pages
  • Product profiles on G2 and Capterra
  • Review-service profiles such as Trustpilot
  • Industry-specific company directories
  • Official product-related profiles on GitHub

Compare the company name, product name, official URL, description, and category with the current company website.

LinkedIn recommends completing a Company Page with information such as industry, company size, overview, description, logo, website URL, and location. (LinkedIn Help: Complete your LinkedIn Page)

Focus on profiles for services you genuinely use and on sites cited for your target queries.

2. Review sites and communities

Review sites provide information that does not come from the company itself.

Peec AI's analysis placed G2 and Yelp in its overall top 10 cited domains. Tripadvisor, Trustpilot, and Clutch also appeared among the top 100. (Peec AI: Top domains cited by AI search)

Beyond review volume, check the following:

  • The use cases reviewers describe
  • The company sizes represented by reviewers
  • How reviewers distinguish the product from competitors
  • Whether old pricing or product details remain on the profile

Reddit is also a major source across several AI services.

Posting promotional content solely to influence AI search can conflict with Reddit's spam policy. Reddit lists repetitive posts for exposure or financial gain and repeated unrelated links among examples of spam. (Reddit Help: Spam)

In communities, contribute concrete experience and facts that answer the question instead of promotional copy.

3. Comparison articles and industry publications

Comparison and review articles often shape brand discovery when people ask which product or service to choose.

AirOps found that nearly 90% of third-party brand mentions in commercial queries came from listicles, comparison articles, and reviews. (AirOps: Third-Party Sources Drive 85% of Brand Discovery)

For example, a company that offers an AI search analytics tool might track queries such as:

What tools track visibility in AI search?
What are the best AI search analytics tools for SEO agencies?
How can I tell whether ChatGPT cites my website?

Record the articles cited in responses to those queries.

When the same comparison article is cited repeatedly and lists competitors but not your company, check that publisher's inclusion criteria and update schedule.

Useful information for an editor can include current pricing, product specifications, original research, expert comments, and new features.

Useful facts and data for an article update are more valuable than a request for placement alone.

Your site remains the official source

Third-party sources do not replace the company website.

Editors and reviewers use official sites to check product features, pricing, and company details. Make the following information explicit:

  • Official brand and product names
  • Services offered
  • Intended customers
  • Pricing and eligibility requirements
  • Key features
  • Operating company
  • Current product information
  • Research data and other first-party evidence

When a third-party article contains old prices or descriptions, your website provides the basis for a correction request.

Publish accurate facts on your own site and keep external listings accurate too.

Finding relevant third-party sources through target queries

Use the questions your customers ask in AI search. General domain rankings are useful for identifying possible sources, but query responses show which sources are relevant to your business.

Record the following for each response:

Field What to record
Brand mention Whether the brand appears
Cited domain The cited domain
Cited URL The cited article or page
Source type Review, community, comparison article, publication, or another type
Competitors Competitors named in the same response
Engine ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or another service

When the same site is cited for multiple queries, compare its existing brand information with the company website.

Use the citation record to decide which third-party sites and listing details need attention.

Keep first-party and third-party information aligned

Accurate information is needed on both the company website and relevant third-party sites.

Publish official pricing, features, company details, and research on your own site. Compare third-party listings in reviews, comparison articles, communities, and industry publications with those official details.

Focus on accurate brand information in the sources cited for your target queries.

Frequently asked questions

What is a third-party source in AI search?

A third-party source is information published outside a company's own website, including reviews, community posts, comparison articles, news coverage, and specialist publications. It can also include an external page, such as a LinkedIn Company Page, that the company can edit.

Will posting a brand name on Reddit make it appear in AI search?

Peec AI identifies Reddit as a major cited source, but a brand mention or citation depends on the query, the full response, and the sources used. Repetitive promotion and unrelated posts can be treated as spam. Limit contributions to relevant, specific information that follows each community's rules. (Reddit Help: Spam)

Do third-party sources remove the need to improve a company website?

The company website provides official information about pricing, features, and the operating company. It also gives third-party writers a source for product details, so accurate information is needed both on the company site and on relevant external sites.
