Four metrics for AI search visibility

Search rankings alone do not show how visible a company is in AI search. An answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or another AI service can mention a brand, cite a page, or send a visitor to the site. Each outcome answers a different question.

Metric What it measures
Mention rate The share of answers that name the brand
Citation rate The share of answers that cite a page on the site
Share of Voice The brand's share of mentions or citations among tracked competitors
AI referral traffic Visits arriving from AI services

Tracking these metrics separately shows brand awareness, source use, competitive visibility, and site visits without treating them as the same result.

Use Search Console for Google AI search visibility

Google Search Console provides a Generative AI Performance report for AI Overviews and AI Mode. It reports impressions where Google Search's generative features showed a link to the site, with page, country, date, and device dimensions. (Google Search Console: Generative AI Performance report)

This report covers Google Search. It does not report how often ChatGPT or Perplexity mention a brand or cite a URL.

For a closer look at the report and how to choose pages to review, read our Search Console generative AI performance report guide.

Data Primary measurement method
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions Search Console
Brand mentions in ChatGPT or Perplexity Prompt tracking
URLs cited in AI answers Prompt tracking or a specialist tool
Visits from AI services GA4
Citations in Microsoft AI experiences Bing Webmaster Tools

Calculate brand mention rate

Mention rate is the percentage of tracked answers that include a brand name.

Mention rate = answers that mention the brand ÷ answers measured × 100

If a brand appears in 15 of 50 answers, its mention rate is 30%.

The prompt set needs questions that do not contain the brand name. For an AI search analytics company, examples include:

What tools measure AI search visibility for enterprise teams?
How can an SEO agency measure its clients' visibility in AI search?
Which tools show whether a web page is cited by AI search?

Brand-name queries show what happens when the searcher already knows the company. Category and problem queries show whether the brand appears during earlier research.

Calculate page citation rate

Citation rate is the percentage of answers that cite a URL on the site as a source.

Citation rate = answers that cite a site URL ÷ answers measured × 100

If 10 of 50 answers cite a page on the domain, the citation rate is 20%. Record the cited page with every result.

| Query | Brand mention | Citation | Cited URL | | --- | --- | --- | | AI search analytics tool | Yes | Yes | /features | | How to measure AI citations | Yes | No | - | | Improve an article for AI search | No | Yes | /blog/example |

This record can reveal a useful gap: a brand may appear in an answer while none of its own pages are used as sources.

Compare competitors with AI Share of Voice

Mention rate only describes one brand. AI Share of Voice compares that brand with the competitors recorded for the same prompts.

AI Share of Voice = brand mentions ÷ total mentions for the brand and competitors × 100

For example, a brand with 20 mentions against competitors with 35, 25, and 20 mentions has a 20% Share of Voice.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini can produce different answers for the same prompt. Calculate Share of Voice by service so the report identifies where a competitive gap occurs.

Build a stable prompt set

Repeated measurement requires the same prompts. A useful set includes problem, category, comparison, implementation, and brand queries.

CapstonAI uses 25 to 50 prompts as an example starting panel for AI citation tracking. This is an operating example, not a requirement set by AI providers. (CapstonAI: How to Build a Prompt Panel for AI Citation Tracking)

An AI search analytics company starting with 25 prompts could use 10 problem queries, 8 category and comparison queries, 5 implementation or industry queries, and 2 brand queries. Select prompts from the language used in sales conversations, competitor comparisons, and pages where more citations would matter.

Run important prompts more than once

Generative answers vary between runs. A single answer is not a reliable representation of a prompt's result.

Run Brand mention URL citation
1 Yes Yes
2 No No
3 Yes No

For this example, mention rate is 2/3 and citation rate is 1/3. Recording each answer makes change over time visible without relying on one run.

Use GA4 for AI referral traffic

GA4 shows sessions, landing pages, key events, enquiries, and purchases that follow visits from AI services.

Its default AI Assistant channel covers traffic from recognised assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot, and Grok. Matching traffic uses the ai-assistant medium. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Organic Search instead. (Google Analytics: Default channel group)

Citation rate measures whether a URL appears as a source; GA4 measures visits and outcomes after a visitor reaches the site. Together, they distinguish pages that receive citations from pages that produce site activity.

Use Bing Webmaster Tools for Microsoft AI citations

Bing Webmaster Tools provides AI Performance for citations in Microsoft Copilot, Bing AI-generated summaries, and selected partner integrations. The report includes Total Citations, cited URLs, Grounding queries, and citation trends. (Microsoft Bing: Introducing AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools)

Search Console reports impressions from Google's generative search features. Bing Webmaster Tools reports the URLs used as sources in Microsoft AI answers.

Specialist tools for larger prompt sets

Manual records become time-consuming when prompt and competitor counts grow. Specialist tools can track several AI services and competitors against the same prompt set.

As of September 19, 2026, examples include:

Tool Plan and price guide Main coverage
OtterlyAI Lite $29/month, 15 prompts Daily tracking for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Copilot
Peec AI Starter, 50 prompts Visibility, position, sentiment, and Share of Voice across AI models

Find page improvements with Please Cite Me!

When measurement identifies pages that receive few citations or prompts where competitors appear more often, review the changes needed on the target URL.

Please Cite Me! runs a page audit of a public URL. It checks whether AI systems can access the page, understand its content, verify its claims, and use it as a source worth citing.

Frequently asked questions

What does AI search visibility measure?

It measures brand mention rate, page citation rate, Share of Voice against competitors, and referral traffic from AI services. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions are available through Search Console.

Can Search Console measure ChatGPT and Perplexity?

Search Console's Generative AI Performance report covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Track ChatGPT and Perplexity mentions and citations with a fixed prompt set or a specialist tool. (Google Search Console: Generative AI Performance report)

Does GA4 show the number of AI citations?

GA4's AI Assistant channel measures site visits from recognised AI services. It does not count brand mentions or URL citations inside AI answers. (Google Analytics: Default channel group)

How many prompts should an AI search measurement set include?

No official prompt count exists. Use queries that reflect the problems, categories, comparisons, implementation conditions, and brand searches relevant to the business. CapstonAI gives 25 to 50 prompts as a starting example for a prompt panel. (CapstonAI: How to Build a Prompt Panel for AI Citation Tracking)
