How to Get Cited by Perplexity

Perplexity displays pages it uses as sources for an answer. To be a candidate source, your page needs to be accessible and contain information that can support the answer.

Check these seven areas:

  1. Make sure PerplexityBot can access the page.
  2. State the answer to the question clearly in the body.
  3. Cite sources for numbers and factual claims.
  4. Update information that has become outdated.
  5. Make comparisons and steps explicit with tables and lists.
  6. Check sources beyond your own website.
  7. Record citation results for each target query.

Crawler access alone is not enough. The page itself needs to give readers and Perplexity information they can verify.

Check Whether PerplexityBot Can Access Your Page

Perplexity identifies PerplexityBot as the crawler it uses to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results. Sites that want to appear in those results should confirm that robots.txt does not block the crawler (Perplexity Crawlers).

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

Allowing the crawler in robots.txt does not resolve every access issue. A WAF, CDN, login requirement, or regional restriction can still block the request. Perplexity recommends checking both its published IP ranges and the User-Agent when configuring WAF rules (Perplexity Crawlers).

Check What to verify
Public URL The full article is available without signing in and returns a successful response.
robots.txt PerplexityBot is not blocked unintentionally.
WAF and CDN Legitimate requests from Perplexity’s published IP ranges are not rejected.
Robots meta tag Pages intended for search visibility do not use noindex.
Main content The answer is not limited to an image or a screen that appears only after interaction.

Perplexity-User is a different User-Agent used when a user’s request may require Perplexity to visit a page. Perplexity distinguishes it from PerplexityBot, which is used to discover and link sites in search results (Perplexity Crawlers).

Perplexity also states that PerplexityBot does not index full or partial text from a site that disallows it in robots.txt. A blocked page may still have its domain, headline, and a short factual summary indexed, so make the allow-or-disallow decision intentionally (How does Perplexity follow robots.txt?).

Put the Answer Directly Below the Heading

A page can be crawled without providing the information needed for an answer. Under each heading, state the conclusion first, then explain the reason, conditions, examples, and evidence.

For example, an article explaining PerplexityBot can begin like this:

## What Is PerplexityBot?

PerplexityBot is a web crawler that discovers and links web pages in Perplexity search results.

When the answer appears only after several paragraphs of background, both readers and search services must work to find it. Write paragraphs that make the subject, conclusion, and applicable conditions understandable on their own.

Cite Sources for Numbers and Facts

Pricing, dates, product specifications, laws, and research findings need a source a reader can check. Use official documentation, original research, and reports published by the organization that conducted the analysis instead of relying on summaries of summaries.

Research on content changes for generative engines compared several approaches, including adding sources, quotations, and statistics. The study reported visibility gains of up to 40% in its benchmark. This result describes a research benchmark; it does not measure the citation rate of ordinary web pages in Perplexity (Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization).

The useful conclusion is not that adding statistics guarantees a citation. Specific facts and sources that readers can verify give an answer more evidence to draw on.

Update the Information in the Page

Prices, user counts, market sizes, specifications, and supported features change over time. Review the body copy, comparison tables, FAQ answers, and source links rather than changing only the updated date.

Ahrefs analyzed roughly 17 million cited URLs across seven AI search platforms. It reported that Perplexity’s in-text references had an average age of 1,166 days at the time of analysis. The study describes publication and update trends; publishing a newer article does not determine whether Perplexity will cite it (Ahrefs: New Study: AI Assistants Prefer to Cite Fresher Content).

The relevant check is whether the answer and its evidence are still accurate, not whether the date displayed on the page is recent.

For an AI search tool comparison, review:

  • Current pricing
  • Available features
  • Free-plan terms
  • Supported AI search services
  • Recent official announcements
  • Numbers in comparison tables

Do not update dateModified while leaving outdated numbers in the article.

Show Comparison Criteria and Steps Clearly

Questions in Perplexity often ask for a comparison or a method, not just a definition. Tables and numbered lists help make the criteria and steps visible rather than burying them in paragraphs.

Criterion What to show
Intended user Whether the product is for individuals, in-house teams, or agencies
Pricing Setup fees, monthly cost, usage charges, and contract terms
Features The specific measurement, auditing, writing, or reporting functions being compared
Limits Usage caps, regions, languages, and additional charges
Evidence The official pricing page, specifications, terms, and date checked

For an article about AI search tools, relevant queries might include:

  • Which AI search tools are best for agencies?
  • How can I check whether Perplexity cited my website?
  • Which tools audit pages for AI search?

A table or list is useful when it exposes the conditions, differences, or steps required to answer the question. Adding more formatting alone does not make a page citable.

Check Sources Beyond Your Own Website

Perplexity can cite pages other than your official site, including industry publications, review sites, news outlets, and expert analysis. Search the target query in Perplexity and inspect the URLs it actually cites.

For product comparisons and recommendation queries, check:

  • Industry publications
  • Expert articles
  • Review sites
  • Customer case studies
  • News outlets
  • Public official documentation

Confirm that your service name, pricing, intended customers, and claims match information that can be verified outside your own site. When referring to a third-party assessment, link to the page that supports it.

Record Citation Results for Each Query

Searching for a brand name alone does not show whether a page answers a customer’s question. Define the questions customers use, then record Perplexity’s answer for each one.

Record What to check
Query The search intent being measured
Date When the answer was checked
Brand mention Whether the brand or service appears in the answer
Cited URL Whether the cited page belongs to your site, a competitor, or a primary source
Answer summary Whether the service is described accurately
Page change and publication date Which change preceded a difference in the answer

Recording which URL was cited for which query, and as evidence for what claim, helps identify the page and information that need work.

Measure ChatGPT and Perplexity Separately

A page cited by ChatGPT may not be cited by Perplexity. The available information, retrieval time, query, and answer construction can all change the sources shown.

For the corresponding answer, evidence, and access checks in ChatGPT Search, read our guide to getting cited by ChatGPT.

When measuring ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google AI Overviews, record the query, date, cited URLs, and answer content separately for each service. If Perplexity does not cite your page, do not use a ChatGPT result as the only basis for changing it. Inspect the pages Perplexity cites for the same query.

When a competitor’s page is cited, compare more than word count or heading format. Check which question it answers, whether it gives prices, conditions, and evidence, and whether its update date matches the information in the body.

Check Whether Your Page Is Ready for Perplexity

Perplexity work starts with both page access and answerable information. Confirm that PerplexityBot can reach the public page, then show the answer, numbers, conditions, and sources in the article.

Run target queries in Perplexity and compare your page with the pages it cites. Please Cite Me! audits a public URL for technical access and content gaps, helping you identify what a page may be missing for AI search.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a page need to be cited by Perplexity?

The page needs to be publicly accessible to PerplexityBot and state the answer, relevant conditions, specific facts, and sources in the body. Check whether it is cited by running the target query in Perplexity and recording the answer and cited URLs.

What is the difference between PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User?

PerplexityBot discovers and links websites in Perplexity search results. Perplexity-User may access a page in response to a user request. Perplexity documents their separate roles and published IP ranges in its crawler documentation.

Are newer articles more likely to be cited by Perplexity?

Publication date alone is not decisive. Ahrefs found that URLs cited by Perplexity and other AI assistants trended newer than ordinary Google results, while older pages were also cited. Check that facts, prices, specifications, and sources in the article are still current (Ahrefs: New Study: AI Assistants Prefer to Cite Fresher Content).

If ChatGPT cites a page, will Perplexity cite it too?

No single result predicts another service’s sources. Measure ChatGPT and Perplexity separately with the same target query, and record the URLs each one cites.
