FAQ schema alone did not increase AI citations
FAQPage markup describes the relationship between questions and answers in a machine-readable format such as JSON-LD. The FAQ content is the question-and-answer text that a visitor can read on the page.
Those two elements serve different purposes. Current evidence does not show that adding structured data alone increases citations in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, or Google AI Mode. A separate page-level test found an increase after FAQ sections were added to visible content.
For AI search, assess whether the page contains a clear answer that contributes useful information, alongside any FAQ schema.
Schema additions barely moved citations across 1,885 pages
In 2026, Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD and compared them with 4,000 matched control pages. It measured citations for 30 days before and after the change.
| AI search platform | Effect on citations |
|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | -4.6% |
| Google AI Mode | +2.4% |
| ChatGPT | +2.2% |
The changes for Google AI Mode and ChatGPT were statistically indistinguishable from zero. AI Overviews showed a 4.6% decline relative to the controls, but Ahrefs could not attribute that decline to schema alone. (Ahrefs: We Tracked 1,885 Pages Adding Schema. AI Citations Barely Moved.)
The study pooled Article, FAQ, Product, HowTo, Organization, and other schema types. It therefore does not isolate the effect of FAQPage markup.
The tested pages were also already receiving many citations in Google AI Overviews before they added JSON-LD. For those established pages, adding JSON-LD did not produce a clear overall citation increase.
Ahrefs had previously analyzed about six million URLs and found that AI-cited pages were nearly three times more likely to contain JSON-LD. The controlled test did not reproduce that correlation as a citation gain. Pages with schema may differ in content quality, authority, links, and maintenance, so correlation does not establish that schema caused the citations.
FAQ schema showed no citation advantage in the ChatGPT analysis
SE Ranking reported that pages with FAQ schema averaged 3.6 ChatGPT citations, while pages without it averaged 4.2. (SE Ranking: How to Optimize for ChatGPT)
This was an observational analysis rather than a controlled test. It does not show that FAQ schema reduced citations. It does show that pages with the markup did not receive more citations on average in this dataset.
Page quality, existing search visibility, backlinks, and visible FAQ content can all differ at the same time. The presence of markup alone cannot establish cause and effect.
Google does not require schema made for AI search
Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional technical requirements beyond the established requirements for Google Search. It also says that no special Schema.org structured data is required for these features. (Google Search Central: AI features and your website)
Google recommends that publishers:
- allow crawling;
- keep pages eligible for indexing and Search snippets;
- make important information available as text;
- link to pages internally so they can be discovered; and
- keep structured data consistent with visible text.
Writing answers only inside FAQPage JSON-LD leaves the page without visible answers for readers. Google explicitly recommends putting important information in page text and matching structured data to that text.
Visible FAQ content increased citations in one test
seoClarity tested FAQ sections on a set of pages measured across roughly 1,000 prompts. Citations increased relative to the control pages while the FAQs were present, then returned to the earlier level after the FAQ sections were removed. (Search Engine Journal: AI Search is Working. How to Prove It With Real Tests.)
The changed element was the FAQ section on the page. This differs from the Ahrefs study, which measured pages adding JSON-LD across several schema types.
One test cannot predict the result for every site. It does, however, provide a reason to test the questions and answers readers can see instead of treating markup alone as the change.
Write each FAQ as a direct question and answer
Each FAQ should connect one specific question to one self-contained answer. For example, an article about AI search tools could include:
What can an AI search tool measure?
An AI search tool can measure brand mentions, cited URLs, and share of voice across services such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. The platforms and metrics available vary by tool.
State the answer in the first sentence, then add the conditions and details needed to use it. A useful FAQ has four characteristics:
- the heading contains a question people actually ask;
- the first one or two sentences answer it directly;
- the answer makes sense without the surrounding article; and
- relevant figures, conditions, exceptions, and sources appear in the answer.
The value comes from the answer, not from adding an FAQ heading by itself.
Avoid filling a page with keyword variations. Use questions raised in sales conversations, customer support, Search Console queries, and comparison research.
Keep FAQ schema consistent with visible content
FAQPage markup should describe questions and answers that appear on the page. Google's structured data guidelines require markup to represent the main page content accurately and prohibit marking up content hidden from readers. (Google Search Central: General structured data guidelines)
The implementation should follow this relationship:
- publish the question and answer on the page; and
- describe the same question and answer in FAQPage markup when the markup serves a search feature or another defined use.
Google also limits FAQ rich results primarily to well-known, authoritative government and health websites. Most commercial sites should not expect an FAQ rich result after adding FAQPage markup. (Google Search Central: Changes to HowTo and FAQ rich results)
FAQPage markup still has established uses in search, but published evidence for using it as a standalone AI citation tactic remains limited.
Add FAQs that contribute information
Choose questions that remain unanswered after someone reads the main article. A tool comparison might need to address:
- whether a free plan is available;
- which AI services the tool measures;
- whether it supports competitor comparisons; and
- how often the data updates.
Repeating an existing paragraph under a question heading adds no new information. A useful FAQ completes the article with an answer, condition, example, or source that the reader still needs.
When FAQPage markup is present, verify that it remains consistent with the visible question and answer after every content update.
Tests reveal the role of useful FAQ content
Adding FAQ schema alone has not produced a clear citation gain in published data. The page-level FAQ test points to a different question: whether the FAQ contributes answers that make the article more complete and worth citing.

Does FAQ schema make ChatGPT cite a page?
Published evidence does not show a citation increase from FAQPage markup alone. In SE Ranking's analysis, pages with FAQ schema averaged 3.6 ChatGPT citations, compared with 4.2 for pages without it. Because this was an observational analysis, it does not isolate the markup as the cause. (SE Ranking: How to Optimize for ChatGPT)
Can visible FAQ content increase AI citations?
In one seoClarity test, adding FAQ sections increased citations relative to control pages, and removing the sections brought citations back down. The result came from one test and does not establish the same outcome for every site. It provides evidence for testing visible FAQ content as a page change. (Search Engine Journal: AI Search is Working. How to Prove It With Real Tests.)
Should I remove FAQPage markup?
Keep it when the page contains the same questions and answers and the markup serves a defined search or data use. Google uses structured data to understand page content and support eligible search features. Do not add questions or answers to the markup when readers cannot see them on the page.
